Have you seen the Big Fat Gypsy Wedding show on TLC? It started last year and was so popular it recently came back for a second season. And to that I say... YES PLEASE!
If you haven't seen this show, at first glance it looks like a UK cross between Toddlers and Tiaras and Jersey Shore. And okay yes, this is really how these people dress. But the fascinating thing (aside from their over-the-top dresses and parties) is their strong faith and morals. Think: Duggar's level of faith. The girls are not allowed to go out alone on a date, let alone drink, or anything else. They travel in groups and work very hard not to get their name tarnished, aside from their super trashy clothes. It's absolutely fascinating! The Travelers (Gypsies), just like Amish, have held onto their values, traditions, and morals for hundreds of years. They are nomads who don't want to be contained. They move up to 50 times a year! To them, it's all about freedom and expressing themselves as over the top as possible. Even though the girls look like ho's, they work hard to keep their family's honor and not be thought of as promiscuous.
Other than the totally over the top outfits, young age they get married and, you know, fact they want to 'settle down' in an RV, there is one other kind of odd thing. It's called "grabbing" and it sounds way worse than it is. The guys (usually they are in their late teens) will try to 'grab' the girls by pinning them against the wall and giving them a kiss against the girl's will. Even kissing before becoming engaged is considered being promiscuous and will tarnish the family's name. The guys also get in trouble with the police sometimes because some say there are no jobs for Gypsies, leading them to a life of crime.
Other than following the teenage girl's who are planning their weddings, the show also follows young girls who are celebrating their first communion. Their dresses are just as elaborate as the bride's. It's such an impressive and unique lifestyle that it's impossible not to watch.
On TLC they have a commercial for a 'My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding.' It looks like total redneck trash. But maybe there are Americans who also live this lifestyle? You know I'm going to watch it regardless! Something about this culture is absolutely fascinating to me and I can't get enough of it. Does anyone else watch this show? It comes on TLC Friday nights at 10 EST. Are you going to check out the American version? I can't wait!
